When facing an unplanned pregnancy, it’s not unusual to feel overwhelmed, in an all-out panic, and unsure of what to do next. It doesn’t matter if you are single, casually dating or in a long committed relationship, missing a period can leave you unsure of what your next step should be.

Really, all you want to do is hide under the covers and hope it will all go away. You’re not alone in that feeling, at all. Almost half of pregnancies are unplanned [1]. Other women have wondered how their partner will take the news, wondered what it means for their future plans for school or a career.

You might be wondering if you need an ultrasound to confirm your suspicion of being pregnant. While that is recommended, it’s not the beginning of the step-by-step process.

Make an Appointment

The first step is to make an appointment and come in today. You will meet with one of our caring staff members who will talk with you in a safe and non-judgmental environment. It’s a place where you can ask all your questions and know that you will receive honest answers and unbiased information so you can have confidence in your decisions.

Pregnancy Test

Once you’ve gone through the paperwork with a staff member, we will offer you a pregnancy test to confirm your pregnancy. This is important for a couple of reasons.

You will need a signed pregnancy verification from a medical clinic to proceed with any medical care related to pregnancy. You will also need a pregnancy verification to apply for Medi-Cal. Pregnancy Care Clinic provides these services free of charge.

Ultrasound

Once your pregnancy has been confirmed we will offer you an ultrasound, free of charge. It is the ultrasound that will be able to clearly tell you if your pregnancy is viable and also tell you how far along your pregnancy is. It will also tell you if your pregnancy is in your uterus and not ectopic. Ectopic pregnancy can be life-threatening and requires immediate medical treatment.

Ultrasounds use high-frequency sound waves to form an image and are often performed at seven to eight weeks of pregnancy. They are a reliable tool for ongoing prenatal care and gestational age. Measurements taken in the first trimester are the most accurate. You will get pictures to take home if you wish. Your ultrasound will be reviewed by our ObGyn, and we will call you with the results.

Advocacy and Information

The next step is to make sure to help you sort through your thoughts and feelings, to make sure you have all the information you need, and to help you make an informed decision based on your situation, values, and goals.

You will have the privacy to explore all your options—abortion, parenting, and adoption—and to get clear, unbiased answers to all of your questions.

At Pregnancy Care Clinic we are committed to helping you make the decision that is best for YOU. Choosing the best path for your future, once you have looked at the benefits and risks of every option open to you, will take you from fearful to powerful and sure of the path ahead of you.
